Polytech, in collaboration with the scientific team from the University of Thessaly’s Biochemistry – Biotechnology Department, led by Professor D. Kouretas, has developed an innovative device known as BioLab 1. This apparatus, designed to measure the antioxidant capacity of liquids such as coffee, juices, beer, and wine, was showcased for the first time at the Athens Science Festival on April 9-10, 2016.

The BioLab 1 device, born from extensive research and clinical studies aimed at enhancing human antioxidant defenses, represents a significant advancement in food science and health. The scientific team at the University of Thessaly, under the leadership of Professor D. Kouretas, has created a user-friendly device that includes a colorimeter and specialized software, enabling accurate measurement of the antioxidant capacity in liquids with just a single drop.

Key Features and Benefits of BioLab 1:

  • Ease of Use: The device is simple to operate, making it accessible for both scientific and everyday applications.
  • Health Insights: It allows users to determine the antioxidant content of various beverages, which can help optimize daily intake to support health and prevent oxidative stress.
  • Scientific Validation: Clinical studies have shown the significant health benefits of antioxidants. For instance, daily consumption of pomegranate juice for two weeks was found to improve the body’s redox status, increasing antioxidants and reducing oxidative stress markers.

The Importance of Antioxidants:
Antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting cells and the entire body from free radicals, which are associated with numerous pathological conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. The ability to measure and optimize antioxidant intake is essential for maintaining good health and preventing oxidative stress.

The ongoing research and development efforts by Professor Kouretas’s team aim to further personalize medicine. This approach includes the creation of a device that measures individual antioxidant needs, paving the way for tailored dietary and therapeutic strategies based on metabolic and genetic profiles. This trend towards precision medicine is globally recognized, even highlighted by initiatives like the “Precision Medicine Initiative” announced by former U.S. President Barack Obama.

BioLab 1 was proudly presented at the Athens Science Festival in Gazi on April 9-10, 2016. The event was a collaborative effort involving three domestic companies: Polytech, Coffee Island, and Serinth, showcasing the innovative device to a broad audience.
