Polytech ICARUS Networks & Telecommunications Laboratory

POLYTECH SA proudly announces the launch of ICARUS, an advanced telecommunications laboratory tailored for educational institutions worldwide. ICARUS is a part of the LHP 4000 – Advanced Telecommunications laboratory suite, designed and produced in Greece, representing the pinnacle of digital telecommunications lab solutions.

ICARUS is a state-of-the-art, integrated laboratory solution in the digital telecommunications sector. It is composed of three primary modules:

  1. ICARUS Multimode Digital Telecom Node
  2. ICARUS Network Control & Monitor Software (SW)
  3. ICARUS Educational Software Application (EDS)

These modules enable the configuration and operation of modern network equipment, including Fast to Gigabit Ethernet routers, bridges, switches, and wireless LANs, as well as Mobile Networks such as GSM, 3G, and 4G.

ICARUS Platform Capabilities

  • Configurable for various network setups: LAN, WAN, and Mobile Antenna WAN (GSM, 3G, 4G).
  • Supports a comprehensive range of experiments for students, providing a real-world telecom network test-bed.

ICARUS-Class Network Configurations

  1. Point-to-Point Communications
  2. Multi-Node Communications
  3. Basic Laboratory Configuration
  4. Network Control & Monitor Software

ICARUS Multimode Digital Telecom Node

This node is a versatile, remotely programmable and manageable telecom device. Key user-configurable modes include:

  • LAN Router, Switch, Bridge
  • Wireless LAN Router
  • Wireless WAN (2.8 GHz and 5.0 GHz)

It supports a variety of modern network equipment, from 10/100/Gigabit Ethernet routers, switches, and bridges to wireless LAN and mobile network antennas.

ICARUS EDS – Educational Software Application

ICARUS EDS (Educational Software Application) is a Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) system, allowing students to perform all their activities and classroom interactions via PC. It features:

  • IDEA (Integrated Digital Educational Application): Integral to the laboratory, available in two levels, 1 & 2.
  • Hands-on Training: Focused on practical issues of networking systems, network operation, and management challenges.
  • Experimentation and Learning: Students learn network architecture and protocols by conducting experiments in a real telecommunication test-bed using the ICARUS node.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Networking protocols and equipment functionality including bridge, switch, router, WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, and various wireless technologies (3G, 4G, 5G).

ICARUS provides a hands-on approach to learning, emphasizing practical experience with real network setups. Students will become familiar with:

  • Networking Protocols: Practical understanding of protocols used in networking equipment.
  • Network Layers: Functionality of different network layers (Ethernet, IP, TCP/UDP).
  • Structured Cabling: Hands-on training in structured cabling techniques.

ICARUS represents a cutting-edge solution for educational institutions aiming to provide students with comprehensive, practical knowledge in digital telecommunications. By integrating modern network equipment and hands-on learning approaches, ICARUS equips students with the skills needed for the rapidly evolving telecommunications industry.
