Precision Weeding with WeedBot: A Glimpse into the Future of Agriculture

Larissa, Greece – The future of agriculture is taking root in Larissa, where the OEZIZ project is making strides in precision weeding using innovative robotic systems. An upcoming project workshop, “Innovation and Collaboration in Practice: The Role of Stakeholders in the Project and the Next Day for Agriculture and Primary Production Stakeholders,” promises to shed light on these advancements and their impact on the agricultural sector.

The workshop is scheduled for Friday, June 6, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at JOIST, located at Valaoritou & Tripoleos Strs in Larissa. This event will provide a comprehensive overview of the OEZIZ project, also known as WeedBot, which focuses on precision weeding with the use of innovative robotic systems.

The day’s agenda is packed with insightful presentations:

  • 15:00-16:00: The event kicks off with registrations and a welcome address.
  • 16:00-16:30: Vasiliki Mavroviti (Agronomist – Researcher) and Georgios Lampis (Electrical Engineer – Researcher) from the Networks and Telecommunications Laboratory – ECE Department, University of Thessaly, will present on “Redesigning Precision Agriculture: Innovative approaches to weed control”.
  • 16:30-17:00: Avramoudis Vasilis, Chief Operating Officer at Open Mellon, will present an overview of the company’s activities, objectives, and the results of the OEZIZ project, focusing on how findings can optimize business operations.
  • 17:00-17:30: Petros Tzioumakis, Director at POLYTECH, will provide a similar presentation, outlining the company’s activities, goals, and the utilization of OEZIZ project findings for business optimization.
  • 17:30-18:30: A break is scheduled.
  • 18:30-19:00: Nikolaos Perifanos, a producer from Perifanos Nikolaos, will discuss “Innovation in the primary sector: How technology changes the everyday life of the producer”.
  • 19:00-19:30: Georgia Panagopoulou, Administrator at PANGAEASA, will present on the company’s activities, objectives, and the utilization of OEZIZ project findings for optimizing business operations.
  • 19:30-20:00: ChrysI Laspidou, Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Thessaly and Vice-Rector of Innovation, Internationalization, Partnerships and E-Governance, will present on the Technology Transfer and Innovation Office of the University of Thessaly, including its activities, goals, and the use of OEZIZ project results for future activities.
  • 20:00-21:00: The workshop will conclude with a discussion and conclusions.

The OEZIZ project is co-financed by Greece and the European Union through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and national resources, as part of the Rural Development Program 2014-2020. Key members of the project include NITLAB, POLYTECH, PANGAEASA, and Open Mellon, with Nikolaos Perifanos also listed as a participant in the production of agri-food products.
